Erg Chebbi Dunes Guide

Erg Chebbi is a large field of sand dunes in south-east Morocco, right next to the village of Merzouga. An “erg” is a sea of dunes formed by the wind. It is one of the most visited dune areas in Morocco, and some of its dunes are well over 100 metres high.

Where is Erg Chebbi?

The dunes start just behind Merzouga and the nearby villages. The nearest towns are Rissani and Erfoud. Most travellers arrive by road from Fes, Marrakech or the Errachidia airport. Airport and private transfers.

How to explore the dunes

  • By camel: the traditional way, at sunset or sunrise, or on a multi-day trek.
  • By quad or buggy: guided rides for more speed. See tours.
  • By 4×4: a tour around the whole erg. 4×4 tour.
  • On foot: climbing a big dune is hard work but very rewarding. Go early or late, never in the midday heat.

Sleeping in the dunes

Many camps are set inside the dunes. You usually reach them by camel or 4×4, have dinner with music and sleep under a clear sky. Compare desert camps.

When to visit

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Summer days are very hot, and winter nights can be cold. Read our best time to visit guide.

Respect the desert

Take your rubbish with you, ask before photographing people, and follow your guide’s safety advice, especially on quads and buggies.
